KUALA LUMPUR: The word, bullying, has been associated with negativity and violence throughout the years. It is indeed a tragic phenomenon as bullying cases happened often and the number of cases increases within a year; it is a phenomenon that can be stopped by people if only they were more knowledgeable about the importance of this issue.
Once, there was a case in Malaysia that had the whole country in shocked when a UPNM cadet officer, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain was tortured by more than 10 students in 2017; this was already an example of bullying to the extend where the victim passed away. After this particular incident, everyone starts to voice and express their opinions on bullying but this slowly fades away until another bullying case occurred. People tend to forget how important bullying can get neither it's physical bullying, sexual bullying or even cyber bullying but overall, the impact on it is huge and inevitable.

Everyone has their own personal definition of bullying and Nur Ain Izzati, 21, a degree student at Universiti Sains Malaysia, has her own definition which she stated, bullying is an action where the ones who had more power and authority would repeatedly harm the ones who were helpless. It shows how bully victims do not have the voice and are cast aside when the bullies thrive even more. Meanwhile, a first year diploma student, Nur Liyani Kamaruzaman, 19, stated that it is an aggressive behaviour among adolescents which consists of verbal and non-verbal actions. This conclude that most bullying cases usually happen in schools where adolescents are thriving and developing; there would be a clash of social class where bullies would come from the top of the food chain while the victims are usually at the bottom, without power. Nur Liyani also stated that bully victims would not tell anyone about their experience and would tend to have trust issues even though they want to voice out their opinions yet it is suppressed as they are scared. She continued, "Bully victims should have the chance to express and tell others for their own mental health benefit as it would be easier for society to get rid of this negativity that could harm innocent people."
Both interviewees agreed that the cause of bullying start from the very root and background of the bullies themselves; most bullies live in problematic surroundings while the other half are just lacked of love from their parents. They will try their best to gain attention from everyone in the environment that they are living in, either forcefully or voluntarily. Nur Ain Izzati also explained that bullies tend to bully others because they want to see other people suffer as part of their satisfaction. Bullying would be a daily routine for these bullies especially at schools but the outcome of it would inflict pain on others; bully victims would be traumatised and they would not have any interests that could lead to depression along with suicidal thoughts.
We as a nation cannot end bullying in a swift of lightning but we can reduce bullying cases all over the country. Nur Liyani suggested, "The media should highlight bullying such as commercials on television and social medias because in this current generation, we usually use social media to gain information." Nur Ain Izzati, on the other hand, agreed with Nur Liyani's statement but she added that, awareness campaigns about bullying should be compulsory in schools so adolescents would be knowledgeable about the issue. It shows how bullying is a serious topic that many should dive into more instead of overlooking it as a minor issue; without the presence of bullying, our nation and our country would thrive, peacefully.
